They probably just somehow acquired a list of all bikes...

Or, you could be right, getting a digit off... sometimes it is hard to read the numbers.

I'm not sure how far stolen bikes travel with the original theft ring/fences. Getting them 100+ miles away greatly reduces the chances of recovery. Perhaps moving them a few thousand miles is risky on the road, but once at the destination, they are relatively safe if the S/N wasn't recorded.
