I've combined new tires with old hookless rims fairly brazenly, and only experienced a recurring issue with one particular combo, which happened to be Araya 1-1/4" ally rims and Forte GT2 tires, also 1-1/4", wire bead. Needless to say, once I realized it was a bad combo, I discontinued it.
