How to switch Shimano front bar end shifter to indexed?

Sorry if this is a dumb/frequently asked question, but I couldn't find instructions anywhere after quite some googling, including in Shimano's documentation.

I'm adjusting derailers on a bike with Shimano bar end shifters after a looong break, and can't figure out how to switch the shifter of the front derailer from friction to indexed operation. The rear shifter has a clearly marked quick-access setting on the shifter, and that works as advertised. The front shifter looks different and doesn't have the SIS/friction markings on it. I believe the shifters are Shimano Ultegra, from 2005. I have used the front shifter both in indexed and friction mode, and I've apparently been able to switch between those at some point in time, but now I can't get the thing to go indexed. What to do?
