If it is the original chain I would probably just replace it as it is likely worn out anyhow.

As Prowler noted, there are different widths of links available, with the 7.1 and 7.3 mm both being for 8 speed chains (which is what we use for most vintage applications).

EDIT: I've recently been using the KMC x8.93, which can be had from ebay for $11-12 shipped. This is part nickel plated, and is a nice chain.
