For shoelaces, it's just a matter of tying them correctly to stay out of the chainring. Here's what I do:

Tie a bow normally.
Gather up both loops and the tag end that's closest to the chain into a bundle, and pull them to the outside of your foot (away from the chainring.)
Take the remaining tag end (originally away from the chainring,) and wrap it around the bundle, securing it by going through the loop (half-hitch.)
Now, everything hangs away from the chainring. The longer your laces are, the better this works.

Or, simply tuck the laces into the shoe.
