I have a DIY hub drive which is fine for errands and relatively flat roads. Also, I'm in the process of building a mid drive. Most of what I've read reflects that (IN GENERAL) mid drives are the best choice for hilly areas and hubs for flatter terrain. I was at an demo a few weeks ago and rode many of each type of bike, mtb, fat and road oriented designs. I liked the hubs best (don't ask me why).
