I've run into this before and just used a spacer. If all you need is 3-5 mm, I can't imagine that it will be that much of an eyesore. You won't see it when riding and that's what you should be doing anyway, right?
I can be a bit fickle ;-) You're right, though. I won't see it when riding and knowing I'm not the only guy with that extra spacer in there will help me get over it when I see it while hanging the back up after a ride.
