DreamRider, what size are the two stems? I'm assuming they are "threadless" stems, with the two bolts to clamp onto the fork steerer. They will have an angle in degrees and a length, either cm or mm. For instance, 7 degree and 100mm (or 10cm).

Use a level to measure the drop from the top of your saddle to the top surface of the bars near the stem. How much drop do you have?

I get lower back pain if I'm pushing hard on a steep climb at a very low cadence. It's an over use of my back muscles. But that's probably not your same problem.
