It's perfectly fine to straighten a moderately bent hanger, once anyway. After a couple of times it will be more likely to break. An alignment tool is nice, but not really necessary. Laying a good straightedge, like a 16" steel machinist's rule, on the part where the derailleur tightens against and eyeballing it vertically and horizontally compared to the frame can get you plenty close enough.
