I have used the Nashbar and Performance Forte brifters on a few bikes and they have performed quite well.
They do feel a bit cheaper than the Shimanos, but the proof will be in their longevity (or lack thereof.)
My only observation is the audible "click" on both upshifts and downshifts.
In a racing environment, this would make sneaking a shift impossible..........
