His concussion must have led to cooking food improperly due to not being right in the head maybe?

I think most of us, at least I have, at one time or another done some exercise after a bout of illness and felt better than ever. I would guess after an illness your body has really shifted to healing and recovery more so than it usually does. And you are probably down a few pounds. Perhaps like Lance Armstrong getting cancer and coming back even leaner and lighter.
