Pedal problem- large feet

Hi, all

I have a Surly Crosscheck. I switched out the pedals with a pair of Shimano SPD hybrid pedals, anticipating trying clipless at some time in the future but wanting the platform option also.

My issue seems to be that since im a larger guy i can't close my legs parallel to the frame and so my pedaling resembles a bit of a duck like stance, feet splayed outwards about about a 30 degree angle. I also have flat wide feet. The hybrid pedals feel small, like, finding them with my feet feels really strange. Are there extensions for pedals, or hybrid pedal options with a larger platform option? I like the pedals I got and I can't return them to Amazon, and I got a good deal on them anyway. I don't want to take them off and put the plastic ones back on, either if I can avoid it because they are slippery.

Am I just being hyper sensitive to this, and it will go away with time and weight?
