Just as malefactors can hijack a thread and make it worthless (or worse) benefactors can hijack a thread and make it decent. There's probably nothing to gain disparaging anyone (at least in a bicycle forum) but benefactors make things better by contributing and ignoring provocations. OP asked a real question; perhaps others can benefit from honest answers even if he can't. Fora have lurkers.
I broke a left crank arm. I bought a suitable replacement from Niagara Cycle for $8. I tried a local bike shop that had used parts but they didn't have anything; new was $50, perhaps an appropriate price.
