I have exactly the same bike in my basement and want to restore it back to its old glory kind of. Unfortunately I need to change the cassette as some of the sprockets are worn down, but I don't know which kind of cassette to buy. To convert it to a single ring at the front seems like a good idea, but what kind of ring do I need to buy? The old 3 rings are worn down as well. Also probably a new chain is necessary, can I buy any chain for it?

This is an old thread. You should start a new one either in the mechanics or the classic and vintage forum. What you propose is pretty straightforward since parts are readily available.
