New handlebars on an early 90's stem

Hey everyone, I am wanting to change out my handlebars on my Allez. It has the stock Specialized stem with the stock Specialized Down In Front handlebar. I bought it brand new in 1993, but 20 some years and a fuzed lower back makes it less than comfy to be in the drops or on the inner bars. So a compact handlebar is what I want. But looking at current bars they seem to be rather thicker than what I currently have in place. Should I be concerned or am I overthinking this?
