South Mountain Ride

I rode to South Mountain again this morning. The temp was 89F when I left just before 4 AM. Like last time I started out south on 23rd Ave. Followed the bike path to Thomas Rd. From there it is a block to Dunkin Donuts where I had coffee and a protein bar.

If you are more interested in pix go here.

The reason I left so early this morning was to try a couple of night shots of Downtown Phoenix.

From the second shot it is a short coast off the bridge to 5th Ave where I turn south again. I work my way thru downtown to 1st Ave. Then follow it south until it mergers with Central Ave. There was a small hobo camp just south of the tracks. I may have unintentionally woke one of them.

I follow Central Ave south to Dobbins Rd. Where I stop for a powerade. From there just follow Central Ave. At the park it turns into the park. Just keep going. I stopped at the ranger station to use the restroom. Afraid it was locked. There is a sign with advice on hiking in the heat there.

Back on the road I continue. It is uphill here.

I am cruising about 6mph along this stretch. After a mile or so you come to a fork in the road. The left takes you to the top of the mountain on your left. Not ready for that hill yet.'

The right fork is closed to autos. I go around the barricade and continue on San Juan Rd. Shortly the road starts down. Way cool! Somewhere in this stretch my bike computer logged a new max. 27mph. I know. It ain't that fast. But it is for me.

After 5 or 6 miles you come to San Juan Lookout. The last time I was here I drove here. There is a good hiking trail on the Ma Ha Tuak Range from here. From here you can see Phoenix in the distance. A little hazy in the morning sun. There is also a structure here.

No tables, benches or roof. Not sure why the structure is here. After some powerade which is still cool I start back. At first it is downhill. Speeds in excess of 20mph. Whee! I stop to take a shot of casino on the Gila River Indian Community.

Shortly I start back up. No 27mph this time. More like 6 or 7. A few roadies pass me. The only reason more didn't pass me is because there weren't any more. I stop at a suitable place to shoot the Sierra Estrellas bracketed by the valley. With a shadow selfie.

Back at the fork the road turns downhill again. It will be downhill all the way to the river now. Easy cruising. I stop at Dobbins and Central for water. Coming out of the store there was a group of 30+ cyclists riding toward the park. Mostly road bikes. By the time I got to the street and took a shot they were well down the road.

From here it is about 12 mi home. Stopping for a chocolate milk just before home. When I got home about 7:40 AM the temp was 95F.

36.9 mi
2 hrs, 46 min riding time
