For many years (minimum of 10 if I read correctly) after the introduction of their triple cranksets, there was no special front changer.
We mechanics got pretty handy with tools we used to manipulate (bend) the chain cages so triples (and many doubles) would run.
After increasing feedback from the field, Campagnolo came out in the mid-80's with the first triple front changer I'm aware of.
Having said that, your Nuovo Record front changer is totally correct for the setup - it just may not shift as well as some others.
