The only issue with a pipe cutter is that it actually pushes a little of the metal out creating a lip when the blade first starts cutting. With a saw it cuts away the metal. It's not a big deal as long as you have a file and spend a little time removing the lip. If you leave it there you may not get the stem and other parts on.
