Just want to back that up. Did a gravel ride a while back with a dude that ran roadie shoes and pedals and his cleats where dead by the end of the ride.
I've done both, sometimes I'm too lazy to put the SPD pedals on my gravel bike. Not had any issues, but I stick Kool Kovers on my SPD-SL cleats when not riding.
