Yeah, I can't blame Stan's for selling the official product at a markup, it's a small company. But like many things, if you do a bit of research you can save a lot. It's not that surprising it's not a product formulated specifically for the application - MTB tubeless, in its most popular form today, is basically the product of garage tinkering. Stan presumably went down to the hardware store and grabbed a few rolls of strapping tape, spent the rest of his time on the sealant formula.
