This was one of my other reasonings for abandoning the Garmin - Their maps and routing are not at all (quite surprisingly) tailored to cycle friendly routes)
I'm often out running errands and didn't have a pre-made route made (and then uploaded) to the Garmin to the impromptu destination.
Just did a test ride in Manhattan on the city streets. Google maps did indeed give me a slightly longer route when I selected bicycle, but it was almost all on local bike lanes. So sweet. I could never get a Garmin for my style of riding with this kind of on demand navigation at my disposal.
