Bikes: too many bikes from 1967 10s (5x2)Frejus to a Sumitomo Ti/Chorus aluminum 10s (10x2), plus one non-susp mtn bike I use as my commuter

I can't speak to the specifics, but I wonder if this is a generational issue.

Campy likes to recycle names, and it's possible that your Athena headset has absolutely nothing in common with current ones except the name. So, you're getting balls for the current version, not yours.

Buy the loose balls in the size you need by dimension, not model fit, and you'll be fine. Just hand pack the loose balls the same way most of us do anyway (many even believe loose is better, but let's not open that can of worms).

As for the label, simply someone not tracking when changes were made. Wouldn't be the first time, won't be the last.

Anyway, as I said, I can't speak to exactly what happened, this is just one possibility.
