As far as Greg riding different frame materials in the same race, I remember reading in ~1991 or so that he would start out in the Spring on steel, then as fitness progressed he'd move to titanium and finally carbon. Given his rapid comeback in 1989, he seems to have done something similar within that year's Tour.
