For the last 20 years I have had a hanger at my place so have lots of room with typically more than a dozen bikes for the family. At times I have several projects and repairs waiting for parts or time in progress and I use your approach along with a hitch mount carrier mounted to a solid base for overflow from my two Park stands. Never tried anything but just rigid straps, don't think I would like the flexing.
