It's not a subject that comes up a lot these days, but BITD steel pedals were necessary if you used metal cleats, like the TA nail on variety. Aluminum cage pedals required plastic (or leather) cleats, and not everyone had or preferred those.

There's something to be said for steel cage pedals, since the long nail-on TA cleats are relatively available on ebay (etc) and can be used to convert any dress shoe into a cycling shoe. Most plastic slot cleat shoes in usable sizes are long gone.
