Identifying 6-speed chain rings

Undertaking my first project bike, a comprehensively hashed Schwinn Voyageur which I will use for a commuter. Managed to save the wheel bearings, replaced the BB, trued and cleaned and lubed, replaced cables. The chainrings are toast, and since the cranks are 170mm and I prefer 175 I figured I might as well look on the internet for a crankset. It is my understanding that 6/7/8 speed are compatible but 9 and up don't work well with 6-speed chain/cogs. Assuming this is true, nd please set me straight if it's not, how do I identify a "vintage" triple crank listed for auction as 6-speed suitable? The bike has a Sakae XCE crank, and I have seen a couple of that model, just not 175, and there are so many others at better prices if I know that, say, a Shimano FC-M201 will work.
