I've never worked on a Kronos GS but I've seen other bicycles with twist shifters in that location that have used multiple piece handlebars that were assembled after the shifters were placed on the bars.
Thanks for the info. Now that you mention it, I notice that there is a sleeve through the stem and clamps on either side of the handlebar stem... and I just put it together now that the handlebars must split into two pieces under the stem clamp system.

That makes more sense.
