Tubeless tape with adhesive is a much better alternative as it sticks to the rim bed and doesn't move around. Tesa 4289 strapping tape is what i use and its the same stuff as Stan's tubeless tape but is better value because it comes in a bigger roll per $/£.
The tape seems very strong. I wrap my rims in 2 layers. When installing it be sure to pull it tight when laying it in the rim bed.
It's also lighter than conventional rim tape so you save few grams.

Any other adhesive tubeless tape will be good enough for the job.
