that's why C Slate caught my eyes... except one version all have (some) front suspension and wide tires (significantly wider than cross bikes). So it's kind of road bike, but not really :-)

yes, I've broken my 4th metacarpus on left hand last day of skiing :-/
it's not catastrophically bad, but not fit for downhill or park until late autumn :-(

I didn't realize the Apex came with out a suspension fork. Of the three it will have the slackest geometry and sounds like it would be a good fit for your mixed surface riding. The higher you can make the front end the more pressure you will take off your hand.
