If you've tried the other fixes listed and still have a problem, you can cheat the cushioning. Instead of full-on padding, try electrical tape or a small vinyl protector. It the chain strikes the same area, cover the smallest bit of that area. It won't dampen the sound as much as thicker padding, but it will help, and will protect the paint.
