Very interesting discussion. I recently bought a road bike with Ultegra 6800 and feel I could do with a lower gear or two. It's 50/34 with 11-32 on the back. I'm thinking of fitting an IRD Elite 12-36 which will give me one gear lower by 3.25 gear inches - 25.39. I'll need to adjust the B screw but won't need any other mods. To go lower I would need either a bigger cassette, 40 or 42T which I think would cause shifting problems, or a new crankset, such as the Sugino or Rotor. A 30T inner would give another 3 inches on a 36 cog, to 22.43, while a 28 inner would be 21.07. I'd also need to lower the FD which is a braze on.

Seems a lot of money for not a great improvement and quite a bit of fiddling about. I suppose I can always walk when I grind to a halt.
