To counter the statement that nobody pays, I can claim to have tallied up my purchased throughout each tax year and then paid what is owing. It's the cost of citizenship, but much more importantly a measure of one's character.
I simply counter with if we can't build a system where online retailers can remit required taxes for each state, I can't be bothered to keep track of every out of state purchase and send them a check.
Seriously, this isn't the internet in 1994, they've had two decades to update their laws to account for this and figure out how to collect taxes.
