Last weekend I was scouting a way to get to WRL from the Mid-Cities and found that Santa Fe trail to/from downtown, and Irving Blvd from Downtown to Irving works really well. Nobody on Irving Blvd on the weekends and even during the day, it's 40-45mph and 2-3 lanes most of the way.

From there you can take the trail through Mountain Creek Preserve over to MacArthur. Lots of options from there. Maybe Hunter Ferrell Rd/Hard Rock and work your way over to Trinity Blvd. I've taken Trinity all the way out to 820 a few times and it's not bad. Another option would be to cut up to the trails that go through River Legacy Park in Arlington.

I know a few of the Team Bikes Inc guys that regularly go between the mid-cities and downtown, so I think once you get into the Grapevine, HEB, Irving area, you should be able to find something if you haven't already.
