In my experience, Atala (and Lygie) frames of that era are stamped YYXNNNN, where YY is the last two digits of the year, X is a letter (most often "A"), and NNNN is a four digit number of meaning unknown to me. Might be a simple sequence number, but perhaps it narrows down the build date a bit.

Here's my 1970 Super Pro and a 1950s Atala whose serial number seems to pre-date this scheme, having just a letter and four digit number, no year (though perhaps it's tucked away elsewhere on the frame).
