If you can comfortably get to the far east side of Deep Ellum... Santa Fe Trail is a much better way to get to WRL from my experience. Bit shorter, and far less pedestrian traffic to dodge when I tried it. Personally, I don't have a problem riding on the road through most parts of Deep Ellum, Downtown, Uptown or Victory Park as I did a good stint of commuting through those areas in the past.
