It's not a rando "thing" where I ride. My main rando club is based in the west of Tokyo, so many of their routes involves a significant bit of urban riding, but mostly the courses follow a numbered road as much as possible to make it easy to follow the course.

They also publish the route online in a way that lets you export a GPX, TCX or KML track for use in electronic devices, which is why I almost never have to use a paper cue sheet.
