That is, if you're serious about getting into cycling? This is the minimum entry level price point for a decent bike.
Stick with brands sold at bike shops and you should be fine. Of the major brands, Giant tends to offer the best value for the money.
I would add Cannondale (which are a very close competitor to Giant in selection), then Trek and Specialized (the Big 4) for safety. At least until you really know your bikes.
