And, The CR18 rims in the 590 mm size are delivered polished. They are pretty shiny -- you can tell by loking that they are aluminum instead of chromed steel, but they are sufficiently shiny and won't rust. Treefort has them in 36h for about $30. Amazon has third party sellers with both 36h and 40h for $32 or so with free shipping, I think.

Spokes, as always, are a problem. Treefort has Wheelsmith for $24 for 50 2.0 straight spokes. Can find spokes for a little less, I suppose, but unless you order form Europe, they won't be much cheaper, in my experience.

I don't know if the mtb_addict has identified the bike he wants to fix, but a complete donor bike, either an old 3-speed Schwinn or Raleigh, might be a consideration. Could harvest the hub and maybe other useful things and if patient, these old bikes can be found pretty cheap when the paint is no longer good and rust has retaken the chrome/steel.
