See if you can get some pics and post them here, would you? I'm interested in seeing where it was. There's a stretch just north of the golf course that passes along a bunch of neighborhoods and there are usually people out walking, fishing, smoking pot and what have you.
I just rode it from Whittier down to seal beach and back on Saturday - no issues. Not even a hint of an issue. No homeless, no thugs, just a dude that freaked me out a little when he passed me too close on one of those little kickers after an underpass.
