I fashioned a pair of plexiglass inserts to "prevent" hot spots. 14 weeks to go.

edit: the inserts need to be a bit longer. Maybe to mid arch.
And they need to be a bit more robust: right insert broke after 3,000 feet of climbing at start of third climb today.
Year before last I tried a pair of Puma soccer shoes with "composite" liners (sandwich of aluminum flashing and cork board wrapped with duct tape) and my feet were pretty tired and sore after the 85 miles - even on platform pedals (which I though would help).

Went that way because the year before I didn't like walking with the Sidi leather shoes with cleats.

Got in better shape and the Sidi's were perfect last year (although the year I walked alot I did the long route)
