Yeah, but it's a sacrifice I'm willing to make. I buy a new race setup once per year and it might get about 600-700 miles of use, most of which is in racing. It's expensive but I get discounts and partial reimbursment as part of my team benefits. These are not high mileage tires and I have different bike(s) for training, commuting, foul weather and crappy roads.

And it makes a big difference! Tires and tubes are the most effective upgrade you can purchase, performance-wise. Some fast tires and latex tubes on a box rim will save more energy than gatorskins on some Zipps, for example.
