These were German Frysians, Ostfriesen, they don't take their folklore/sport as serious as the Dutch Frysians appearantly otherwise he would have known it is a skill. Frysland is pretty wet, so every farm field has a water filled ditch around it about a meter wide, the pole vault is a relatively easy way to cross those fieds. I cycled into such a ditch once and it's only funny for the bystanders. But as a sport it has grown pretty impressive:
