From someone who bought and sold both a Surly and a Soma in order to create a “ discount Riv”, I suggest buying the Riv or finding a used one (They don’t wear out!). I wasted 7 years and about $2000 buying, upgrading and selling those bikes before getting a used Hillborne for $1600. Wish I’d just bought a new one 7 years previously. Not only would I have spent just a little more money, I would have bought about the exact same model and enjoyed my cycling more during those 7 years. If you join the Rivendell Owners Bunch, people often sell Rivs to get different Rivs. Great people with lots of knowledge to share.

Just a suggestion.
