I wonder what the canal peeps were up to here. My guesses were:
1. Checking to see how deep the sediment was
2. Taking out scoops so they could monitor how wet the sediment was, then when it got dry enough, they'd scoop it all out and the scooping and hauling would be easier.
But it seems like samples every 20' is a little excessive for either one of those...
