Ok. I dug into some this afternoon. I cleaned it up a bit, needs fully disassembled. But I wanted to see what worked or didn't. Turns out, the 9 speed cassette is just there, probably spare wheels from something else. It would only shift the smaller 8. Even in friction. That 9 speed cassette is 12-25. I tried a 8 speed 12-32 cassette, and a small adjustment of the RD. And it handles the 8 speed and 32t. On the work stand at least. I did slip a spare front tire on it, and there is space for a 700x32 up front. Probably rear too...

I took it for a short spin in my neighborhood. I'm anxious to get it on the road...
