If vintage seat posts get your saddle where it needs to be on 54s, go for it. But first, I would collect some one cm shorter stems and as you change your bar tape try a shorter stem. Most everyone I ride with rides smaller bikes than they "should" AND shorter stems, AND most of them are faster than me. So there is that. However, I shortened and raised my stem on my 28mm fat tire bike and I feel really old -- like I have given up and I'm just going for a cruise. I don't like that feeling.
