The other potential problem with Carbonaro's "joke" is the potential for fraud. He (or one of his imitators) could have easily charged his customer for completely bogus service and never let him in on the joke. Auto mechanics, appliance service people, etc. do it all the time.
The "victims" in the video clips sign off their approval after filming, otherwise it wouldn't be aired. Anyone else in the scene not central to the prank usually don't sign off (probably aren't asked to) and are therefore blurred out.

So, the "victims" that make it to a public "broadcast" have either a good sense of humor, or want to be on "TV", or . . .
