As long as the rear der cage still has some play out available when in the big/big then the worst case of tearing off the der from the frame is pretty much non existent. Chain length does affect the guide pulley's gap to the cog's undersides (assuming a der cage where the cage pivot is not also the guide pulley's). This is the likely reason that the system seems better now.

As a tourist, when I can get time off, I like to run the longest chain possible as one can always repair a chain link issue by removing the link and still retain a big/big combo without issues. But that's my preference. Andy
