It's not going to work as well as a bakfiets for capacity or weight but it carries more of both than a standard bicycle and is easier to maneuver than a bakfiets - it fills a nice middle space. I don't know that I'd want to carry 200lbs of potatoes in one but several bags of groceries works well. Keep in mind that it's slightly lower than a typical front or rear rack. It can hold more than panniers and I prefer the weight in the front than hanging off the back in panniers.
