The heat maps are very good, and obviously they get distorted by group rides with dozens, hundreds, or thousands of riders (hence the one day a year when you can run/ride across the canada looks like it gets a lot of use).

Personally, I would put my bike on the train and go that way. That doesn't look like it will be a fun ride. It is flat though, but most of those roads are going to be hot, exposed to the sun and fairly swift traffic.

I posted this last year, but I've never biked south of that. there was a discussion here on something similar if you can find that.
